DIY With Style: Living Room Bookcases

Do you love books?  I do, so much so, my husband gave me a Nook earlier this year.  As much as I love the convenience and portability of it, I still crave holding a book, hearing the rustling of the pages as the story sucks you in.  So today’s post on about your book cases.  This seems to be a common problem for my clients, so let’s look at some beauties.

Step 1 – Take everything off the shelves and give it a good dusting.

Step 2 – Organize – either by subject or by color or by size.  Doesn’t really matter, but I tend to group items by subject and books my color.  For the books, I’d recommend weeding out paperbacks  – they don’t tend to stand well and their spines tend toward unattractiveness.

Step 3 – Decide what style you want your bookcase to have.  Colorful? Calm? Collected? Library?  Find a photo in a magazine or online that represents the look you’d like.

Step 4 – Fill in the gaps.  You may find that you are low on quality-looking books, or don’t have enough accessories – so fill them in.  I love great look books that you can find at your local bookstore, or even “books-by-the-foot/yard”.

Do you ever walk into your bathroom and wish it were bigger and of course prettier?  I do almost on a daily basis.  Normally it is when I am standing behind my husband waiting to get in front of the sink.  I keep thinking I can figure out how to get a double vanity in there, but in reality I think we will probably move before I ever get there.  So when we do move guess what will be my main focus?  The Master Bath.

There are so many master bathrooms that I love and here are some that I think have some really great ideas.

1. Even though it is not a master bath I think this bath has lots of character.  This would have been awesome when I was a teenager!

2.  This bathroom has such great natural light, I would love getting dressed in here.

Do you ever look at your kitchen and just think it is kind of boring?  The easiest and most cost efficient way to revitalize your kitchen is to replace your hardware.  You can go from super elegant to way quirky.  I tend to be a little on the quirky side and as a matter of fact the last house I owned had forks and knives as the hardware which were always great conversation starters at all gatherings.

Here are a few that I think would really spice up a kitchen.  I especially like the the Kitchen ID Series from Notting Hill.  They would  really make life easier when instructing my husband in the kitchen!

As the holiday season starts peaking around the corner I tend to think of all of the holiday gatherings.  As we all know the party always ends up in the kitchen.  The ideal kitchen is different for everyone, but here are a few that have some wonderful entertaining and styling ideas.

1. Zen and Compact: This zen space is compact while still feeling roomy enough to entertain.  I love the large island and breakfast bar because they allow for plenty of gathering space. Can’t you imagine throwing a party here??

2. Clean and Modern: This is a large kitchen with an elegant feel.  I love the streamlined marble counter tops that contrast with the dark wood table. I dream of lazy Saturday mornings at this breakfast table.

3.  White and Bright: If I could keep it clean this would be my bright white kitchen.  It just feels subtly glamorous.  I love the idea of a breakfast table built off of the island, it is such a great use of space.

4.  Classic and Modern: This kitchen is so clean and neat with a pop.  I love the way the blue island stands out creating an interesting focal point as well as gathering space.

Living Life Well – Elegant Fireplaces

Posted in Design inspiration, Fireplace, Houston Interior Designer at 8:35 am by luxuryforthehome

Is it possible to have Fall fever?  If so, I think I have it.  The cooler weather is creeping into my memories and pulling me past to trips to Carmel & Napa.  Really, I’m ready to go and enjoy myself.  The cooler weather also seems to bring the anticipation of cold weather and all the things associated it with it.  For me, that is fireplaces.  Many people dream of skiing, well I stink at skiing – we won’t even go there!  While you a swooshing down the slope, you’ll find me with a book and a cup of tea, snuggled in a chair, next to a gorgeous fire.

And lest you think I’m not serious, I’ve been known to turn on the A/C to enjoy the fire, if it’s not cold enough.  So enjoy a little luxury and live your life well fireside.

For the past year and a half my life has revolved around babies especially now that he is almost six months old.  Now three of my girl friends are going on round two and have asked me for ideas about nurseries.  Therefore here are few that have a great feel for a new baby and their families.

1.  Soft and Modern: I love this one because it is modern but still feels soft and touchable.

2. Retro and Quirky: This is such a fun nursery with all of the bright colors and interesting wall art.  Definitely a place I would enjoy spending time in.

3. Feminine and Glamorous: I love this room because of its femininity.  The upholstered ceiling is a real treat.  It is a beautiful space for a baby girl to blossom.

I find that for Monday, I’m dreaming of my bed. Thursday help a surprise trip to the hospital for our eldest son. Everything is fine, but my husband and I didn’t have any quality sleep for about 36 hours.  So today’s inspirations are the Master Bedroom, a place I am going to work hard not to sneak off to today.

Living Life Well – Simplify

Posted in defining your luxury, Design inspiration, houston interior design, Houston Interior Designer, Luxury for the home, Luxury interior design at 4:42 pm by luxuryforthehome

By Leslie Hassler

Today I wanted to share  a bit of my design philosophy with you. This philosophy guides my choices and designs for my life and my clients. It helps to create an environment to help you live your life well.

My most important principle is simplicity. Simplicity is difficult to achieve in the complex world of more. It, like anything else needs attention to flourish.  And just like achieving balance, sometimes simplicity is about making adjustments.

So what is the first thing we like to do for our clients?  Edit, that is reduce the amount of things.  If an object does not have a purpose, or doesn’t illicit a positive (not neutral) response from you, then it really doesn’t belong in your home.  It should bring you happiness, remind you of a fond memory or make life easier for you.

Enjoy these simple rooms.

Living Green: Chill Out and Get Clean

Posted in Houston Interior Designer, Kitchen Appliances, Kitchen Remodels, Kitchen Renovations, Luxury for the home at 7:30 am by luxuryforthehome

“Living Green” is a growing interest and topic that seems to be on everyone’s list.  I have an interest in it and I am currently working toward a ReGreen Remodeling Certificate.  There is a lot of confusion around what is green, but I’ve found a fair amount of it to be common sense, especially when remodeling or updating your home’s interiors are concerned.

One of the easiest choices to make comes with the upgrading of appliances when they need it, or when redesigning the space.  Above all, strive to purchase an Energy Star appliance.  Not sure which one’s qualify?  Check out this link from the Energy Star – there are 40 categories of products just for your home!

The Main Appliances…

Dishwasher – I have to tell you, that I think there is only one dishwasher to have. There are so many options out there and many of them are fantastic. However, as you can read in my previous blog post, I had an affinity for a particular model in my clients’ kitchens.  After living with it in my own house, I can’t say enough about it.  We are so happy with it, we show it off to our guests. The ASKO dishwashers rate well for energy usage, capacity and water usage.

Refrigerator/Freezer – The kitchen appliance with the largest visual impact is your refrigerator, so be mindful about finishes and style when you are selecting this piece. While we do want consistency of finish and handles on our appliances, many refrigerators have a panel ready option, should your choice of refrigeration clash with other appliances. I am a firm believer in the Sub Zero refrigerators, primarily because they just do a really outstanding job of refrigeration (and freezing of course) and they last for a really long time. Previous blog post But there are many other products coming on the market that offer some interesting innovations.

Innovation in Refrigeration:

Norcool Freestanding Corner Refrigerator

Usually small kitchens had some limitations, but this model really tries to give a big bang for the buck.  Also, since this is a bit different for many people, it does have the option of being fully integrated, or panel ready.

GE Custom Cool

Refrigeration that allows for customization is a great energy saver for you.  I love this full extension drawer from GE that has Express Chill, Express Thaw and Select Temperature settings.  I know that would come in handy for our kitchen.

Miele Super Cool

Miele’s Super Cool feature efficiently cools the internal temperature  after the door has been open.  All these innovations and more can give you some luxurious for today, while still reducing your impact on resources.

Making your kitchen work for your today and tomorrow requires the expertise of knowing your options.  At Luxury For The Home, we bring that expertise to you. Saving you time, so that all you need to do is enjoy your kitchen.  Call us  at 281-701-2461 to bring our expertise to you.

A Field Trip to Luxury – Kravet & Lee Jofa

Posted in Houston Interior Designer, Houston Interior Designers, Houston Intertior Design Blog, Uncategorized at 6:14 pm by luxuryforthehome

by Leslie Hassler

I made it to New York today for the 2010 Business of Design Conference.  This is my third year attending this bi-yearly conference.  As a member of the Best Practices Network, I get the chance to put aside project work to work on the business, along with another 100 top interior design firms.  I came up a little bit early to take advantage of a private tour of the Kravet/Lee Jofa design studios.  And what a wonderful field trip it was. I definitely need to thank Steve Prada, Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Bob Beloff, Vice President of Sales for being our gracious hosts.  And a huge thank you to everyone in the studio who shared with us their work and progress.

We are escorted through each line’s design studio and able to look at fabrics that are literally launching today, as well as lines and books that will take a bit longer to get to market.  There are some exciting things coming to market, but I did see a few trends throughout the space.

The first is the use of yellow & gray color scheme.

Traditional Home - Decorating With Sunshine!

One of the studio’s highlighted Thom Filicia’s work with Kravet, which has some lovely yellow, grays and Ikat prints – Check out this video about the collaboration –

The other line introduction that I am very excited about is the partnership with Oscar de la Renta – very fashion inspired. Check out Kravet’s celebration of Oscar de la Renta.

Not directly on our tour, I was shamelessly snooping at all the fabrics around and found this lovely.  This shot shows the Kravet fabric based on Oscar De La Renta’s skirt (on top).  My mind is still spinning with fun ways to put this new design to work.
